Remember Otto, the autopilot from Airplane?

As a kid, I remember taking the movie too seriously (before I knew it was a comedy and totally farcical).

But the scene when all the pilots get sick and the plane started going down. That really stressed me out.

One of my friends is in a similar boat (or should I say “plane” to keep the metaphor going?).

He is the manager of a landscaping company. In the northeast, we have all four seasons, and they are quite distinct. So for him, the warm weather months are the feast period. 60-80 hour weeks are the norm as landscaping projects abound.

However, in the fall and winter, the company supplements its income by salting and plowing parking lots IF it snows.

That’s right. IF. They are dependent on the weather for up to one third of their yearly wages. Regardless of your personal views on global warming, I, personally, would not like to have to rely on the weather for several months of my income.

Yet this is similar to how most businesses operate.

The traditional referral method leads to a “feast or famine” type of environment. Some months there is a lot of activity. Some months, it’s a ghost town.

Unless you are a pro sports team generating millions in ticket sales and TV deals during the season and then millions more in merchandise sales year-round, the “off-season” is an absolute detriment to your business.
