What is the number one differentiator between those who consistently grow their businesses and those who fail to break through to the next level?
It’s not a lack of word-of-mouth referrals or a subpar website. It’s not a shortage of effort or willpower. It’s not a lackluster client retention program or social media presence.
In fact, it is often the trickiest and most head-scratching component of your business. But it’s also the most crucial piece to figure out, and most never do.
I would like to share a quick story to better illustrate this.
It actually dates back to my childhood. I can still picture it, clear as day.
My favorite toy as a kid was a set of plastic dinosaurs and cavemen.
My friends all loved the T-Rex or the Stegosaurus or that little spiky-tailed Ankylosaurus.
Not me. My favorite was the Woolly Mammoth. A 6-ton hairy elephant with gigantic tusks up to 14 feet long! And all the poor cavemen had to fight it was some rocks, crudely-fashioned spears, and wooden clubs that even Babe Ruth would have struck out with.
I would play with these toys over and over with basically the same formula. The savage Woolly Mammoth would rage and thrash, unfazed by the crude weapons of the cavemen.

His tusks would quickly dispatch one after another until only one caveman remained. He would somehow face down that beast, and as the Mammoth reared for a final kill, he’d drive his spear home through its underbelly, a victorious hero.
Despite its size and ferocity, the Woolly Mammoth faced total extinction thousands of years ago. They should actually serve as a WARNING to financial advisors. Despite thriving for eons, eventually the beast met its end.
Now they are just a memory. And if you are not aware of the biggest marker of success in your business, you may be on the verge of extinction yourself.
Whether it was climate change or human hunters, the Woolly Mammoth did not adapt to the change in its environment. As a parallel, consider how consumer behavior has changed as the Internet has leveled the playing field for businesses in many ways.
How have you adapted to this change?
There is a basic flaw in the design that inevitably sends most financial advisors the way of the poor Woolly Mammoth. And here it is:
Without a method for acquiring qualified leads, your financial advisor business will soon face extinction.
